December 2025

Client A walked into our center determined to have an abortion.

She had left an abusive relationship just four days earlier. Though she was physically safe, she was terrified. She told me she believed that if the father of the baby ever got back into her life, he would eventually kill her—and the baby.

She didn’t want an abortion, but she felt she had no other option. She couldn’t imagine raising a child connected to someone so dangerous.

When we talked about how far along she might be, she was in denial. She desperately hoped she was under ten weeks so she could pursue a chemical abortion. I gently asked if she would consider discussing adoption. She quickly said no.

She asked for a sonogram. She wanted to confirm she wasn’t “too far along.”

As soon as the image appeared on the screen, she began to cry.

“It’s so big,” she whispered. “How can this be happening?”

We measured the baby. We listened to a strong heartbeat. She was 18 weeks along.

She kept crying—but something shifted. She began smiling through tears. She started referring to the baby as “she.” She told me she already had a son and hoped this baby would be a girl.

At her request, we listened to the heartbeat again.

She had originally declined to hear the details of a second-trimester abortion, but because she was in her second trimester, she allowed me to explain the procedure. As I gently walked through what that would involve, she was visibly shaken—horrified at what she was hearing. She sobbed.

It was one of the hardest appointments I have ever done. And it will stay with me forever.

Before she left that Thursday evening, I asked one more time if I could contact an adoption agency for her.

She said yes.

The next week, she told me she had chosen an agency and was beginning the process of selecting a family for her baby.

But that wasn’t the end of her story.

She reached out again, this time with practical needs. She was rebuilding her life from the ground up and needed basic household items, including a dryer.

Within hours of sharing the need, our team began reaching out to local churches. Before long, Christ Chapel not only had a dryer—they had a matching washer. A church member volunteered to deliver everything that same day. Other gifts began pouring in.

That evening, our team delivered the items to her.

Later that week, I met the man who delivered the washer and dryer. He told me she was overwhelmed by the generosity. He said she talked about God more than in almost any conversation he could remember. He was able to pray with her in her home. She even asked if she could visit his church once life settled down.

She couldn’t believe the kindness she had received.

From start to finish, this case is my why.

It was one of the most emotionally difficult appointments I have ever had—but it was also one of the most beautiful. A woman walked in feeling trapped, terrified, and alone. She walked out with hope, support, and a plan for her future.

This is what compassionate care looks like.

This is what showing up looks like.

And this is why we do what we do.
